The oldest & most established route
Least scenic variety of the 7 routes as the ascent and descent are done on the same path
Minimum 5 day itinerary for Marangu
The 5-day itinerary success rate is low
It is highly recommended to do the 6 day itinerary to improve probability of success
First section of the Shira route is a 4WD track
The vehicle bypasses the rain forest zone
You start your trek at Shira Ridge (altitude of 3500 m/11500 ft)
Great for short treks, not good for acclimatization

The Umbwe route is a short, steep, & direct
